Nabila Aguierre joined Antonini & Cohen four years ago. She first heard about an opening as a case manager through her friend Kathleen Hoyos, an Atlanta immigration attorney and an associate with the Antonini & Cohen team. After an interview with Marshall Cohen, one of the firm’s founding principals, she was hired right away.
Born in Acapulco, Mexico, Nabila lived in Lake Tahoe as a young child and moved to Sandy Springs at age 9. She graduated from Riverwood High School and studied early childhood education at Southern Catholic College in Dawsonville, grateful for the grants that allowed her to attend. When she graduated college, she knew she wanted to help people—she just wasn’t sure how.
Initially, she got into apartment property management, helping tenants arrange repairs and dealing with other issues. She enjoyed the work, but after six years, she felt like she wanted to solve bigger problems than leaky faucets.
Her own experience navigating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) process with her family inspired her to make the jump into immigration law. The first time a client called her in tears—overwhelmingly happy he had gotten a work permit while he waited for his green card—she knew she’d picked the right field to make a difference in the lives of others.
“Seeing people smile when they achieve whatever goal they’re going for, whether it’s getting a green card or bringing their family over, makes all of the complications worth it,” Nabila says.
Because the Atlanta immigration lawyers at Antonini & Cohen promote from within and actively encourage staff development, Nabila eventually transitioned from case manager to paralegal. Her language skills and ease with clients have made it an exciting new path for her.
“One surprise has been how complicated almost each and every application process is,” she says. “It’s challenging for the team, but we’re up for it.”
A newlywed, Nabila is gearing up for her honeymoon this January. With a sports-obsessed husband, she’s also figuring out football, watching Falcons games with friends, and hoping the team can make a repeat showing in the playoffs this season. When it’s not a game day, Nabila loves to go to concerts or attend music festivals.
At home in Norcross, she watches old seasons of “The Office” on repeat. She also ventures out to explore Decatur’s restaurant scene. It’s local only for Nabila — no fast food here! She especially likes Leon’s Full Service, with its fresh ingredients from nearby farms and suppliers, and Victory Sandwich Bar, with its addictive $4 bites.
We’re glad to have you on the Antonini & Cohen team, Nabila!
