permanent-resident-cardYou have a lawful permanent resident card (green card) but you do not know under what category you received the status. This handy list can help you determine the program under which you adjusted. Any attorney helping you pursue naturalization, family petitions and advising you on out of country travel needs to determine your category to ensure you are represented properly. For example, people under “AS6” or as an asilee, can be exposed to having their asylum protection rescinded if they travel to their country.

People under “IR6”or as a spouse of a USA citizen, may be eligible to apply for naturalization after 3 years as permanent resident instead the usual 5 years. A “CU6” Cuban may be able to also adjust their status of their after-acquired spouse and children, even if they are not Cubans.

As you can see, these codes are important. To find out your code, look in the center of your green card under the word “Category”, look at the code and find your match under this list. If you believe your card has an erroneous code, it is very important to request that USCIS correct the code. Antonini and Cohen can help you ensure your green card accurately reflects your status.

CR1 Spouse of a U.S. citizen
CR2 Step-child of a U.S. citizen
CU6 Cuban refugee
CU7 Non-Cuban spouse/child of an alien classified as a CU6
CX1 Spouse of a lawful permanent resident alien
CX2 Step-child (under 21 years of age) of a lawful permanent resident alien
