Attorney Sarah Owens Discusses Recent Changes in Immigration Detentions and Removal Priorities on WABE Radio

Attorney Sarah Owings of Antonini & Cohen Immigration Law Group was interviewed recently by WABE radio, NPR’s Atlanta station, on deportation and the immigration process.

There have been over 2,200 Central American minors coming to Georgia since last summer and over 30% have received a deportation order, with the national average being at 15% for deportation of these youths. The scheduling of cases within immigration court can be very tight in Atlanta, making asylum cases difficult to do. The schedule is oftentimes so tight that hearings can be within weeks of one another.

Owings acknowledged that getting information from another country can take time and feels that deportations are highest in Georgia due to the process, not case types.

“You hope when you go to court that you would have similar results in similar cases across the board because immigration is federal law,” Owings said.
